Mavericks say superstar guard ‘making progress’ but hasn’t practiced since calf injury

(Rachel Rydalch | The Salt Lake Tribune) Mavericks player Luke Doncic reacts to a foul delivered in a game against the Jazz on Friday, Feb. 25, 2022.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Mavericks All-NBA star Luka Doncic is should miss Game 1 against the Utah Jazz due to a sprained left calf.

Doncic pulled the calf in the third quarter of the Mavericks’ last game against the San Antonio Spurs. He has missed training for the past three days but has been increasing sideways movement in recent days. On Tuesday he rode an exercise bike and on Thursday he ran on a treadmill instead. However, it appears the condition of Doncic’s calf on Thursday has led to pessimism over his availability for the opening games of the series.

The Mavericks, however, told reporters Thursday that Doncic was not ruled out for the game.

“He’s progressing,” Mavs head coach Jason Kidd told reporters Thursday. ” He is fine. I haven’t practiced, but I’m in a good mood and had a good day.

While Doncic looks unlikely for Game 1, his availability for Game 2 just over 48 hours later is also in question. Game 2 begins in Dallas on Monday at 6:30 p.m. MT.
